My goal is to give you the most accurate and reliable information possible. I do a lot of research so that I don't steer anyone wrong.
However, not everyone who writes blogs puts this kind of time and effort into their writing and we can all get it wrong at some point. Keep this in mind when looking for recipes or advice online.
Just because something says keto or low-carb doesn't mean it is. There is so much inaccurate information online it is frustrating.
Admittedly, the hardest part of the keto or low-carb diet is figuring out how to do the diet correctly.
Using exercise and intermittent fasting along with keto and low-carb dieting techniques, I dropped 48 pounds in 2018. And then again I lost 20 pounds in 2023.
I realized the downfall of keto dieting when a blood test revealed high cholesterol and high triglycerides.
Internet advice can steer you wrong with recipes high in butter, bacon, and cheese.
I got off keto and switched to a healthier low-carb Mediterranean diet and have tried to stay on it since.
On the Mediterranean diet, you don't lose essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals as you do on keto. You can have complex carbs which are a healthy part of a well-balanced diet.
Dieting can Lower Your Electrolytes, Vitamins, & Minerals
Essential vitamins and minerals are lost when food is severally restricted.
Fast weight loss can cause an electrolyte imbalance.
It is extremely important to supplement when you're fasting or dieting. Vitamins and minerals such as salt, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and others are vital to good health.
Get Educated
Before beginning any diet you need to get educated on how to do it in a healthy way. You should also ask your doctor so that you will know if there are any health issues to consider.
My biggest concern about the keto diet is that if you do it incorrectly you could end up sicker than when you began the diet.
Even if you do it correctly it is such a restricted diet that it is hard to maintain. My biggest concern is that it leaves out complex carbs that are healthy for your body.
It is a great way to lose weight fast but I wouldn't recommend it long-term.
The truth is, you don't have to balance your carbs, fat, or protein in a particular way. All it takes to lose weight is to lower your calories.
Fasting is the easier way to lose weight and it comes with many health benefits.
Using non-sugary supplements is a good way to keep your electrolytes, protein, and other nutrients balanced.
I especially wouldn't advise continuous fasting without supplementation. Your body needs nutrition to thrive.
The key to losing weight safely is to give your body what it needs in small amounts at a time.
For example, eating only a handful of nuts or grapes is better for your body than eating an entire a plate full of food.
Your body soaks up the nutrition from a little food with little waste, which is a healthier process as compared to a plate full of food where your body has to get rid of a large amount of waste.
The more waste your body has to flush out, the more the villi in your small intestine struggle to absorb nutrients.
You can train yourself to eat less, be disciplined, and choose better food options for the health of your body.
The key is to create new habits and don't let up with training your body to choose to eat healthily.
Whatever diet you chose, get educated so that it increases good health without harsh side effects.
